Richard Rolle of Hampole (?) was an English poet, religious writer, and Bible translator, who lived as a hermit. Rolle, born at Thornton, Yorkshire, was at Oxford. Impressed by the uncertainty and the snares of life he decided to become a hermit, a resolution which he carried out with somewhat romantic circumstances.
He wrote various religious treatises in Latin and English, turned Born: circa Richard Rolle's English Psalter contains the Book of Psalms in Latin with an English prose translation and commentary on each verse.
The only complete printed version is the edition by H. Bramley, who prepared his collation from a limited number of the extant manuscripts, some of which were corrupted by interpolations. In the light of this fact and of new material on Rolle, a new Author: Ellen Alana Carney.

Richard Rolle of Hampole was neither a priest nor a monk but a simple layman. Although Richard Rolle, hermit of Hampole, was perhaps the most influential spiritual author of the later English Middle Ages, the coming of print was not kind to him.
Although a large collected Latin Opera appeared in the s, it was scarcely exhaustive, and a number of the texts there included, notably Rolle's Latin Psalter commentary, have not been critically examined since.
